Is Difficult Or Is It Impossible?

Getting your life back on track isn’t easy whether you are 30 or 40 or over 50, adjusting to the change takes time and effort. However, it is important to acknowledge that life may not be easy for a while and prepare yourself to take the good days along with the not so good days.

I was working with someone recently, let’s call her Susan, and trying to encourage her to get out and meet some new people.  We were looking at the various places she might go or things she might do in her area that would put her in touch with a new social circle. Susan was being pretty negative about the whole idea, She kept on saying ‘I just can’t do that’ to my suggestions.

“Are you never going to try a new activity where you can make new friends?” “No but….”

“O.K. Susan, is it going to be difficult to go along to your local golf club or is it going to be impossible?”   Long silence, “It’s going to be difficult”

After a bit of discussion Susan agreed that several of the things we had talked about would be difficult but not impossible.

Difficult we can work with. Impossible, we have to go back to square 1 and come up with some new ideas. There is never a dead end – Leonard Cohen says in one of his songs, ‘there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light get’s in’. There is always a way forward, sometimes it just takes a while to find it.

Solution Focused Coaching is all about finding the crack, and making it bigger!

So, if you are struggling to get your life back on track ask yourself the question, ‘Is it difficult or is it impossible?’

Let me know how you get on, share your success stories, you might just inspire someone else to take their next step.
