Stop Baby Battering.

I’ve had several conversations today with people, like me, upset that as a society we seem to be unable or unwilling to do something to stop some babies and children bearing the brunt of adult anger.
Usually I try not to push my personal stuff on this website, however, after a career of working with children and young people with severe behaviour problems I know that many behaviour problems develop in the home. Yes, some children are born with conditions that affect their behaviour and some have medical conditions that can also affect behaviour, but what we are witnessing here is not the result of disability or illness. What we are seeing is children being assaulted by adults that either can’t or won’t manage their anger. They may be substance abusers, they may be depressed but as far as I am concerned there is no excuse for abusing a child. Most of us learn our ‘parenting skills’ from our own parents, sadly abuse is often cyclical, we repeat what we have experienced.
What is abuse?
Abuse can take many forms, emotional, verbal, physical, it can happen as a violent out of the blue incident or it can be insidious and prolonged. Only the worst cases reach the media and our social services are comprised of people who are inexperienced and or over worked so many cases go undetected.
Friends, family and neighbours may be reluctant to interfere – I wonder how they would feel if the child they were worried about was taken to hospital in a critical state and died a few days later.
I know it’s not that easy to step up and say that something is unacceptable, however it is easier to offer help.
Is there a child near you that needs help?
If you can’t do it at least let your local CYFS office know that you are worried.
If you are struggling to cope with your children please ask for help, your G.P. or local health clinic would be good places to start. Ask a friend or family to go with you if you need some support.
Managing your children begins with managing yourself, managing yourself includes managing your anger.
Your G.P. or health clinic will be able to help you attend anger management counselling in your area.
If you are the victim of someone else’s anger you need to get help for yourself and your children – again, see your G.P.
