How Long Does It Take To Get Your Life Back On Track

Getting your life back on track is like most other things in life, commitment and effort in = results out.
Naturally you’ll take longer to get back on track if you have suffered the loss of a loved one, had an accident or perhaps had to go through a divorce you didn’t want. However, the steps to getting back on track are very similar from a Solution Focused point of view.

What is it that bothers you most?

What can you do to make it better?

You know how you feel when you open your eyes in the morning and think, “Oh no, not another day”, it happens to most of us at some time.

Maybe, the thought of going to work is more than you can bear.

You know how you feel when you have no energy left and your kids are desperate for you to take them to the park.

These feeling are symptoms of your life being off track. And one step at a time is the best way to get your life back on track.

Pick one – ‘Oh no, not another day”

What do you think is going to be the worst bit of your day?

On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is very bad and 10 is good, how bad is the worst bit of your day?

Was there a day when it felt a bit better, e.g. if you have given it a 1 just now, was there a time when you gave it a 2, if so what was different that time, what made it better/

Can you do that thing again, to make today better?

Can you think of anything else you could do to get you from 1 to 1.5?

Maybe the worst bit of your day is getting in to work and trying to clear your in-box, deal with phone messages etc, as you try to organise your day, that can certainly make for a stressful start to the day, especially if you have staff that want to ask a thousand questions at the same time. It’s all legitimate and you do have to deal with it, but not all at once.

How about, you deal with the people in front of you right now, do not take any phone calls while you are doing this.
Then put a do not disturb sign up and deal with your in box and phone messages – do not take any new phone calls – unless there is an emergency, while you are doing this.
Next touch base with the people you dealt with earlier and then settle down to your day’s work, knowing that you have dealt with your messages and immediate staff issues.

Whatever it is that is bothering you, think of a time when it was better, notice what made it better, if you can repeat that action, do it, if not, think of one thing that you can do right now that will make things a little bit better. Once you have made that change keep adding one more step or change to keep making things better.

Is your partner getting you down, are you always arguing? Use the same process, when was it better, what was different, can you do that again?
If not, what can you do now, do you need help to communicate without arguing? Do you need help with your finances or whatever it is that you argue about. Identify the real issue then work on changing it for the better, one small step at a time. Don’t rush, it takes 13 weeks to break a habit and the same length of time to establish a new one, just keep your awareness high and focus on the one thing that you are doing differently right now, before you know it you’ll be getting your life back on track!
