Maslow’s Hierarchy includes morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, acceptance of facts and lack of prejudice. He tells us that people who have met all of their needs on the previous levels can take time to explore and enjoy these activities.
I like the term “happy in your own skin”, if you are at ease with yourself you will be able to look at other people without judging them, you’ll spend time solving problems instead of feeling overwhelmed by them. You will respect yourself and others and therefore live a moral life, as you find ways to make your life more enjoyable. The fact is if you are happy with your life you won’t see any need to create difficulties around you, you will be able to accept your own abilities and limitations, you will enjoy everything you have and you will enjoy seeing others make the best of what they have.
Being happy in your own skin takes some work. We are bombarded by images on television and in films of how we should look, what our houses should like etc., etc. Friends and family , with the best intentions, will tell us what we should and shouldn’t be doing. I always say that I don’t do “shoulds and musts”, I make choices about what is best for me and those closest to me under the circumstances.
It’s good to listen to advice from other people, but it’s good to know that you don’t have to take it!
